LASF, Chipata City Council in Payment Agreement

Chipata City Council and the Local Authorities Superannuation Fund have entered into a pension
contributions payment agreement following a high level virtual meeting held on August 20,
2021.
Speaking during the meeting aimed at settling accrued pension contributions, Chipata City
Council Town Clerk Wisdom Bwalya said his local authority was committed to dismantling the
K9,606,666.09 outstanding debt to LASF.
Mr. Bwalya informed the meeting that his Council would commence paying some substantial
amounts towards arrears then move on to paying the current contributions within the next three
months.
LASF commenced Court proceedings against Chipata City Council for the recovery of accrued
pension contributions in February 2019. However, the new Management team that took over at
the Council indicated their willingness to settle the matter through an agreed payment plan. They
committed to settling the debt despite liquidity challenges.
Meanwhile, LASF Managing Director George Chileshe commended the move taken by Chipata
City Council and urged them to stick to the agreed terms.
Mr. Chileshe encouraged other member employers to feel free to engage LASF even via virtual
meetings in the current new normal and discuss the issue of payment of pension contributions.
“LASF has always been open to discussions aimed at finding amicable solutions to the issue of
pension contributions debt with all member employers. In some cases we have even entered into
various forms of debt swap with a number of member employers,” Mr. Chileshe said.
